Stagecoach Inn Museum Complex
The Stagecoach Inn Museum, located at 51 S. Ventu Park Rd., Newbury Park, CA, was originally built in 1876 by James Hammel. It was purchased by Cecil and Cecilie Haigh in 1885 and served the early Thousand Oaks community as a hotel, restaurant, school, post office, and gift shop. In 1964, the Conejo Valley Historical Society formed as the building faced demolition for the U.S. Route 101. The structure was relocated after community fundraising, with land and the building donated by Allen Hayes, grandson of Cecil and Cecilie Haigh, to the Conejo Recreation and Park District for restoration as a museum.
The building was destroyed by fire in 1970, rebuilt, and reopened in 1976. It is designated Ventura County Historic Landmark No. 30, California Historical Landmark No. 659, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1975), and recognized as City of Thousand Oaks Historical Landmark No. 1. The museum complex also includes a reconstruction of Timber School, a blacksmith shop, carriage house, and Tri-Village, which represents the three cultures that lived in the Conejo Valley.
