Timber School and Auditorium

Timber School, located at 1872 Newbury Rd. was built in 1889, as the first school in Newbury Park, California. The original building was torn down and replaced with the current building, dating to 1924. It is the oldest remaining school in the City of Thousand Oaks and the oldest surviving public building in the Conejo Valley. Notably, it was the first public building in the valley to feature electricity and indoor plumbing.

Designed in the Mission Revival style by Roy C. Wilson, Ventura County’s first licensed architect, the present Timber Schoolhouse stands at the southeast corner of Kelley and Newbury Roads. The site later became home to Conejo Valley High School. The school district sold the property in 2015 to a developer. The school and auditorium will be repurposed as office and recreation space. Timber School is recognized as City of Thousand Oaks Landmark No. 12—along with the nearby 1948 Auditorium—and as Ventura County Historical Landmark No. 166.
